Using Vintage Linens for Upholstery, Curtains and Blinds
We are regularly asked, what can the linen be used for? Or I want to cover a chair or make curtains do you have anything suitable?
Whether its new curtains, blinds or upholstery fabric the various linens, there is something suitable, its just a question of knowing how much fabric you require and which linen item would provide that quantity. This section details the various linens and what they are most suitable for.

Linen Sheets: Chairs, Short Curtains, Wide Blinds
Hungarian linen sheets were for single beds so they are on average 200 x 150 cm
Ideal for covering small pieces of furniture. This chair was upholstered using an Indigo Town Polka Dot three panel linen tablecloth/sheet.
Sheets can also be put with striped mattress covers and cart covers to line backs, seats or to make box cushions to use striped design most efficiently.
The sheets are also great for small curtains or wide blinds. Pairs often available in both natural and dyed, we can also have designs and colours printed to order. Mattress Covers: Chairs, Small Sofas, Wide Blinds, Short Curtains
Mattress Covers: Average size- 200 x 100 cm. 4 panels of linen hand stitched together, with an opening, originally to be filled with straw to make a mattress.
Can be opened out to a square 200 x 200 cm or a double panel length 400 x 100 cm
Suitable for upholstering dinning chair seats, small easy chairs. Use for large blinds or short curtains. Striped mattress covers are unusual so snap them up. Plain mattress covers can be matched to make up a quantity of linen or put with a striped cover to make the most efficient use of the stripe. See current stock
The Hungarian linen sacks were used for grain or flour. They vary in length from 100 x 120cm and width 45 -60 cm. Unstitched either 100cm x 100cm or 45 x 200 cm.
For small/ narrow blinds use the parallel stripes or hand-sewn seams as the centre of your design, either widthways or lengthways.
Also suitable for upholstering small seats or sofa box pads as loose or upholstered cushions.
Large volume of fabric originally used to cover content of a horse drawn cart. Each was made to fit indivicual cart so vary from 240 - 600 cm long x 200- 250 cm wide
Perfect to upholster sofas, pairs of chairs or make full length window and door curtains.
Striped designs are generally one-offs. Can be mixed with plain mattress or cart covers to maximise on stripes
2/3 Plain cart covers can often be put together for big projects. Linen shades range from white to grey and cream to sand
